2025 PDP Convention: Lamido Denies Meeting Makinde, Affirms Court Case Still Active

Political tension surrounding the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) intensified after former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido publicly dismissed reports suggesting he had stepped back from his legal challenge against the party.

The veteran politician clarified that his lawsuit concerning the PDP’s national convention remains active and has not been withdrawn as widely speculated in some political circles. The convention, scheduled to take place in Ibadan, has been at the center of a legal disagreement involving Lamido’s ambition to contest for the party’s national chairmanship.

Addressing the controversy through a message posted on his Facebook page, Lamido explained that he had been inundated with calls from party members across the country after rumours surfaced claiming he had held a private meeting with Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, to settle the dispute. According to him, no such meeting ever took place.

Lamido insisted that the circulating report was inaccurate and urged members of the public to disregard it. He maintained that the narrative falsely attributed to him was misleading and did not reflect the true legal situation.

He further revealed that the Federal High Court had already delivered a decision supporting his position regarding the PDP chairmanship race. The judgment, he said, confirmed his right to contest for the position after earlier party processes allegedly prevented him from doing so.

In explaining the implication of the court’s decision, Lamido emphasized that the legal order restraining the party from holding the convention in Ibadan is still in force. He stated that relevant authorities have been officially notified about the court directive.

To reinforce the seriousness of the order, Lamido disclosed that certified copies of the court ruling had already been served on both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the PDP leadership.

According to Gossip News Now, Lamido expressed concern about the spread of false narratives surrounding the issue, describing them as deliberate attempts to distort the facts and create confusion among party supporters.

Key Points Raised by Lamido

While responding to the controversy, the former governor outlined several clarifications regarding the dispute:

  • He has not withdrawn his legal case against the PDP over the convention.
  • There was no meeting or negotiation between him and Governor Makinde concerning the issue.
  • The court ruling affirming his right to contest for the national chairmanship remains valid.
  • A standing injunction restricting the convention from taking place is still operational.
  • Both the PDP and INEC have received official copies of the court order.

Commentary and Political Analysis

The dispute reflects deeper internal tensions within the PDP as it prepares for leadership decisions ahead of future national elections. Contests for party leadership positions often reveal competing interests among influential political figures.

Lamido’s insistence on pursuing legal redress signals that the battle for the PDP’s national chairmanship may not be resolved quickly. Legal intervention in internal party matters can delay key events such as conventions and sometimes reshape the balance of power within the organization.

If the court’s directive continues to stand, it could complicate preparations for the Ibadan convention and potentially force party leaders to reconsider their approach to resolving leadership disputes.

Observers believe the situation may ultimately test the PDP’s internal conflict-resolution mechanisms and determine how effectively the party can manage disagreements among its senior figures while preparing for future elections.
