A senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Segun Sowunmi, has stated that the 2026 governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states will be the first significant test of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s political strength and legitimacy.
Gossip News Now reports that Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, amid increasing public attention on emerging opposition parties ahead of upcoming elections.
Addressing claims that the ADC is positioning itself as a rescue platform for Nigerians, the PDP leader dismissed the notion, stressing that a party’s true influence is proven at the ballot box, not through rhetoric.
“I don’t think so. Their first real test will be in Osun, followed by Ekiti, depending on which comes first. That’s when they’ll understand that success isn’t determined by the noise they are making,” Sowunmi said on Thursday.
He further cautioned against making premature judgments about the ADC’s prospects, noting that political organisations need time to resolve internal contradictions and entrenched habits.
“I have many opinions about the ADC, but it’s still early. One must be careful not to undermine a party that is still finding its feet. Political organisations are made up of human beings; habits and attitudes formed over the years don’t change overnight unless they’re addressed,” Sowunmi explained.
The PDP chieftain also warned against early signs of entitlement emerging within the ADC, suggesting that such attitudes could stifle the party’s growth and cohesion.
“You haven’t even crossed the goal line yet, and already there are heavy discussions about who deserves tickets before anyone has properly joined,” he added.
