The leadership of the African Democratic Congress has addressed growing speculation regarding the membership status of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, firmly rejecting reports suggesting that his registration into the party was irregular.
The clarification followed online claims that the former presidential candidate may not have completed the proper process required for new members within his local political ward in Adamawa State.
Party officials have now insisted that there is no internal disagreement concerning Atiku’s registration, stressing that the process carried out in Jada Local Government Area was legitimate.
Gossip News Now reports that the statement confirming Atiku’s membership came from the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, who spoke to journalists in Abuja.
Abdullahi explained that the party’s national leadership recognizes the registration conducted in Jada 1 Ward and considers the matter settled. According to him, the party has not raised any objections regarding the former vice president’s membership.
The controversy began after a report attributed to an individual named Christopher Okechukwu alleged that the registration process involved individuals who lacked authority from the national leadership of the party.
In that statement, it was claimed that Atiku’s enrollment into the party structure had been carried out by persons not officially recognized by the ADC headquarters.
Party Leadership Rejects Alleged Statement
However, Abdullahi dismissed the claim entirely, stating that the individual credited with the statement is not recognized within any official structure of the party.
He emphasized that the national leadership had neither issued nor approved such a statement and maintained that the party’s records contain no reference to the person cited in the reports.
According to him, the ADC’s leadership structure—from its national executive down to its local units—has not raised any questions about Atiku’s membership status.
Concerns Over Misinformation
The ADC spokesman also warned that publishing statements from unauthorized individuals could create confusion among the public and damage trust in political institutions.
He cautioned that spreading unverified claims could weaken the credibility of political parties recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission and their official structures.
Abdullahi stressed that any official communication from the party must come through authorized spokespersons or recognized organs of the party’s leadership.
Political Significance Ahead of 2027
Atiku’s recent move to join the ADC has drawn attention within Nigeria’s political landscape as the country gradually begins conversations about the 2027 general elections.
The former vice president’s decision to align with the party is viewed by analysts as a strategic step that could influence opposition politics in the coming years.
Commentary and Analysis
Political realignments often generate controversy, especially when prominent figures switch party affiliations. Such developments tend to trigger debates within party structures and among political observers about internal procedures and legitimacy.
In this case, the ADC’s swift clarification appears aimed at preventing internal divisions and maintaining confidence among supporters and stakeholders.
The episode also highlights how misinformation or unofficial statements can quickly spread during politically sensitive periods. As political activity gradually intensifies toward the next election cycle, clear communication from party leadership will likely remain crucial to avoiding similar disputes.
