The question of whether former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might block Peter Obi from securing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket in 2027 has been addressed by Yinusa Tanko Yakasai, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.
Speaking on Politics On Sunday aired on TVC, Yakasai suggested that rather than obstructing Obi, Atiku could potentially lend his support to the former Anambra State governor in the race for the ADC nomination.
“Atiku Abubakar is a leader and a father. He would not be involved in that kind of maneuvering,” Yakasai explained, emphasizing Atiku’s discretion to either contest or endorse another aspirant.
Yakasai further elaborated that Atiku, as a seasoned political figure, has the freedom to choose strategic support over personal ambition, especially if he believes it could secure victory for the party.
“He has the right to contest, but he also has the right to anoint someone else. Winning does not necessarily mean being the candidate yourself. Winning can also mean supporting someone else and saying, ‘Go and win for us; I believe in your ability.’ That is very possible,” Yakasai said.
Currently, both Atiku and Obi are seen as leading contenders for the ADC’s presidential ticket, fueling ongoing speculation about who will ultimately become the party’s standard-bearer.
Despite this, Obi’s supporters have consistently maintained that he remains focused solely on the presidency and is not interested in any subordinate role. Having previously contested under the Labour Party, Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to appearing on the 2027 ballot as the ADC’s candidate.
