Atiku Responds as Son Joins APC Declares Support for Tinubu’s Second-Term Bid

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has stated that his son’s move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a personal choice and not one that reflects his own political direction.

Gossip News Now reported that Abba, as the younger Atiku is commonly known, formally announced his defection on Thursday at the National Assembly.

According to Vanguard, he was welcomed into the APC by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), along with other influential party members from the North-East region.

Abba cited personal and historical reasons for his decision and instructed members of his political group, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation established in 2022, to immediately align with the APC and support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He also commended both Senator Jibrin’s leadership and the policy direction of the Tinubu administration.

Reacting to the news through a post on X on Thursday, Atiku emphasized that such political decisions—even within families—are neither strange nor problematic.

He explained that he does not impose his political beliefs on his children and stressed that his main concern remains the performance of the APC government and the widespread economic and social difficulties facing Nigerians.

Atiku wrote:
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal.

“In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.

“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.

“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people.

“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress.”
