The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly ruled out any involvement in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, insisting that the party remains resolute in its role as a strong opposition platform within Nigeria’s political arena.

In addition, the party has inaugurated its zonal and state congress and appeal committees across the country, a move aimed at reinforcing internal democracy and positioning the ADC for future electoral battles.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held on Sunday in Abuja, the National Chairman of the ADC, Nafiu Bala Gombe, clearly disassociated the party from a statement attributed to Hon. Leke Joseph Abijide, which allegedly expressed support for President Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

“I want to clearly state that the leadership of the African Democratic Congress does not associate itself with the statement credited to Hon. Leke Joseph Abijide endorsing President Bola Tinubu for 2027,” Bala said.

“That statement does not represent the position of the ADC. We reject it entirely and reaffirm our identity as a determined and credible opposition party in Nigeria,” he added.

Bala described the inauguration of the congress and appeal committees as a landmark moment for the party, noting that it underscores the ADC’s dedication to transparency and internal democratic practices.

“It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I address this inaugural gathering of the Zonal and State Congress and Appeal Committees of our party,” he stated.

“Today marks an important chapter in the growth of the ADC. The creation of these committees reflects our resolve to strengthen our internal structures and ensure inclusive participation at every level.”

According to Bala, the committees have been tasked with supervising congresses at the zonal, state, local government, and ward levels, in full compliance with the party’s constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

He explained that their responsibilities also include enforcing constitutional standards, implementing congress guidelines, and ensuring proper electoral procedures such as voting, ballot management, and result declaration.

The ADC chairman further called on party members nationwide to remain united and committed to building a political platform founded on fairness, equity, and justice.

In his acceptance remarks, the Chairman of the North-West Zonal Congress Committee, Abimikun Monday, described the inauguration as a critical step toward repositioning the party for national relevance.

“This inauguration represents a major milestone in our collective effort to strengthen and reposition the leadership of the ADC at all levels,” Monday said.

He noted that the assignment given to the committee demonstrated the confidence placed in them by the party’s national leadership.

Monday praised Bala for his perseverance and dedication to rebuilding the party despite internal challenges, assuring members that the committee would carry out its responsibilities diligently.

“Our mandate is to ensure the proper planning and conduct of zonal, state, and local government congresses in strict accordance with the ADC constitution, approved guidelines, and Nigeria’s Electoral Act,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Kaduna State Chairman of the ADC, Sani Aliyu Mohammed, reiterated the party’s determination to gain political power through democratic and lawful means.

“We will work tirelessly from the state level down to the grassroots to ensure effective organisation and success,” Mohammed said.

“We are committed to making the ADC the new political name and the new anthem on the lips of Nigerians come 2027. This is a pledge, and we will pursue it using every legitimate and legal avenue available.”

He expressed appreciation to party members for their continued support and assured them of the leadership’s firm commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to the newly inaugurated committees.
