2027 Elections: El-Rufai Says Nigerians Have Chosen ADC

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed confidence that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could emerge as a major political force in Nigeria’s next general elections. His remarks came during the opening ceremony of the ADC National Contact and Mobilisation Office in Jos, Plateau State.

Addressing supporters and party officials at the event, El-Rufai argued that public sentiment across the country is shifting toward alternative political platforms. He suggested that widespread dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s two dominant parties — the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — is encouraging voters to consider other options.

According to Gossip News Now, the former governor told party members that the growing number of governors aligning with the APC would not necessarily determine how Nigerians vote in 2027. In his view, the final decision will ultimately rest with the electorate rather than political office holders.

El-Rufai emphasized that Nigeria’s population, estimated at over 200 million people, has the power to shape the outcome of future elections regardless of elite political manoeuvring. While some politicians may change parties, he said ordinary citizens will vote based on their expectations for leadership and governance.

During his remarks, the former Kaduna governor also reflected on his personal connection with Plateau State. He noted that he had spent considerable time in the region over the years and expressed concern that the state had lost some of the unity and tourism appeal it once enjoyed.

He expressed optimism that with improved governance, Plateau could regain its reputation as a peaceful destination known for its natural beauty and hospitality. For him, stronger leadership at both the national and state levels would help restore stability and economic vitality to the region.

While discussing the future of the ADC, El-Rufai highlighted several structural features of the party that he believes could attract broad support across the country. He pointed to the party’s internal arrangement, which prioritizes youth participation and greater involvement of women in leadership.

Rather than listing them in the usual sequence, he explained the party’s representation approach as follows:

  • Over one-third of leadership positions are reserved for women.
  • A significant portion — about forty percent — is dedicated to young Nigerians.

He argued that such arrangements reflect the demographic reality of the country and offer a more inclusive political structure.

In one of the most striking moments of his speech, El-Rufai stated that public frustration with traditional political parties could drive voters toward a new platform. He suggested that the combined influence of governors would not outweigh the collective decision of millions of Nigerians when the time comes to vote.

Commentary and Analysis

Political observers note that El-Rufai’s remarks appear to position the ADC as a potential third force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. With increasing internal disputes within major parties and ongoing defections among political elites, smaller parties may attempt to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction.

However, analysts also caution that translating public frustration into electoral success requires strong grassroots organization, credible candidates, and consistent messaging. While enthusiasm for alternatives exists in many democracies, sustaining that momentum through national elections can be challenging.

The emphasis on youth and women’s participation could also become a strategic advantage for the ADC if it succeeds in mobilizing demographics that have often felt underrepresented in traditional political structures.

As the political conversation gradually shifts toward the 2027 elections, statements like El-Rufai’s are likely to intensify debate about whether Nigeria’s two-party dominance could eventually face a serious challenge from emerging platforms.
