The Obidient Movement has dismissed speculation that Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, might run as a vice-presidential nominee in the 2027 elections.
Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the movement, clarified in an interview on Arise News that Obi’s political focus remains solely on securing Nigeria’s highest office. He described suggestions of a deputy role as baseless and inconsistent with Obi’s ambitions.
Tanko noted that Obi’s domestic and international engagements over the years were part of a strategic preparation for the presidency, not for serving in a secondary government position. The former Anambra State governor, he said, has always aimed to acquire experience and knowledge to lead the nation effectively.
The coordinator emphasized that Obi has consistently stated his presidential intent, and the Obidient Movement fully supports his pursuit of that goal. “As a movement, our interest is the presidency,” Tanko said. “Wherever Peter Obi goes in that direction, the Obidient Movement will follow and support him.”
Regarding Obi’s prospects in 2027, Tanko expressed confidence that he is now better positioned to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He highlighted that Obi commands stronger political structures, broader grassroots support, and greater national recognition compared to his 2023 campaign.
Tanko recalled that Obi’s previous run, although underestimated by many, was viewed by supporters as a success that laid the foundation for future political influence.
He added that growing public dissatisfaction with the current government has further strengthened Obi’s appeal as a credible alternative. Citizens, Tanko noted, are increasingly seeking leaders defined by competence, integrity, consistency, and moral character—qualities he believes Peter Obi embodies.
