2027 Elections: Obi Aiming for Presidency Not Vice Presidential Slot

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has firmly ruled out suggestions that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would consider running as a vice presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, Tanko described the speculation as unfounded, stressing that Obi’s political ambition remains firmly focused on the nation’s highest office.

According to Tanko, Obi’s extensive engagements and global exposure were never undertaken with the intention of playing a secondary role in government. Rather, he said the former Anambra State governor sought knowledge and experience to prepare himself for the presidency.

Tanko explained that Obi has repeatedly made it clear that his aspiration is to lead Nigeria as president, not to serve as a deputy. He emphasized that the Obidient Movement is fully aligned with that vision and remains committed to supporting Obi wherever his political journey leads.

“As a movement, our interest is the presidency,” Tanko said. “Wherever Peter Obi goes in that direction, the Obidient Movement will follow and support him.”

Commenting on Obi’s prospects in the 2027 polls, Tanko expressed confidence in his chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He noted that Obi now commands stronger political structures, broader grassroots backing, and wider national acceptance than during his first presidential run in 2023.

Describing Obi’s chances as strong, Tanko recalled that despite being largely underestimated in the last election, the former governor still recorded what his supporters believe was a victorious outing.

He further argued that growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration has positioned Obi as a credible and appealing alternative for many Nigerians.

According to Tanko, citizens are increasingly seeking leadership defined by competence, integrity, consistency, and moral character—qualities he believes Peter Obi represents.
