Former presidential candidate and ex–Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized what he described as the growing culture of openly glorifying electoral malpractice in Nigeria.

Obi made the remarks on Wednesday in Enugu State while officially declaring his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition. During the announcement, he warned that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 general elections would be firmly challenged through lawful and legitimate means.

He expressed concern that individuals who once benefited from Nigeria’s democratic system are now, in his view, contributing to its erosion by employing intimidation, coercion, and political thuggery against opposition voices.

According to Obi, the public celebration of election rigging poses a serious threat to democracy and must not be tolerated. He stressed that Nigerians who value credible elections must be prepared to stand against such practices.

Obi further called for early and transparent verification of candidates’ academic and personal records, noting that such measures would help prevent avoidable legal disputes before elections.

He reiterated that any plot to subvert the will of the people in 2027 would be confronted using all lawful avenues available within the democratic framework.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has once again dismissed claims that Peter Obi would accept a vice presidential slot in the upcoming election cycle.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, Tanko described the speculation as baseless, insisting that Obi’s ambition remains focused on the presidency.

According to Tanko, Obi’s global engagements were never aimed at preparing him for a secondary role in government but were undertaken to equip him for the nation’s highest office.

Tanko quoted Obi as saying his objective has always been to lead Nigeria as president, not to serve as a deputy, reaffirming that the Obidient Movement remains fully committed to that goal.
