Former presidential candidate Peter Obi is reportedly set to officially align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as consultations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the party disclosed that preparations are already underway among Obi’s supporters and political allies to facilitate his anticipated defection.
A senior ADC official in Abuja, who spoke in an interview with Punch, revealed that Obi recently held discussions with the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, following a request by the ADC leadership for him to take a definitive position on joining the party.
According to the source, the party’s stance appears to have influenced the former Anambra State governor’s decision to embrace the ADC coalition.
The official further disclosed that Obi is expected to formally declare his membership of the party at a public rally scheduled for December 31 in Enugu, widely regarded as the political hub of the South-East.
“We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to officially declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu,” the source said.
“Although the party has not yet received a formal notification, the arrangements are real and ongoing.”
Explaining why the declaration is expected to take place in Enugu rather than Anambra State, the party official noted that the choice reflects Obi’s broader political outlook.
“Enugu is considered the political capital of the South-East. Obi is positioning himself as a representative of the entire region, not just his home state, and that likely informed the decision,” the source explained.
Meanwhile, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said he could not confirm the reported defection but acknowledged that discussions with the former Labour Party candidate are still ongoing.
“There has been no official announcement,” Abdullahi said.
“However, consultations are continuing.”
