Fresh details have emerged regarding separate high-level meetings between former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim and two of Nigeria’s most influential elder statesmen—former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex–Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.).
Sources revealed that the closed-door engagements took place on Monday as part of Olawepo-Hashim’s ongoing nationwide consultations with senior political figures and respected national leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reportedly arrived at Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta at about 11:00 a.m., spending roughly an hour in discussion before proceeding to Minna, Niger State, where he later met with General Babangida.
He was accompanied during the visits by the Chairman of the North Central Renaissance Movement, Nghargbu K’tsɔ, alongside other members of his team.
During the meetings, Olawepo-Hashim reportedly outlined his vision for addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, assuring both former leaders of his ability to tackle insecurity, rebuild national cohesion, stabilise the political climate, and revive the economy.
He emphasised the urgent need for inclusive, purposeful, and unifying leadership, warning that Nigeria risks deeper divisions without decisive action.
At the Minna meeting, Olawepo-Hashim was said to have referenced Babangida’s historical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s unity, recalling the sacrifices made during the civil war.
He reportedly cautioned that the 2027 elections must be treated as a national rescue mission, stressing that continued leadership failure could further threaten the country’s stability.
“General, you still bear the scars of the war fought to keep Nigeria united,” he was quoted as saying. “Many of your colleagues did not survive that struggle.”
He added that allowing the country to disintegrate under poor leadership would render the sacrifices of past patriots meaningless.
Although Obasanjo and Babangida are no longer active in partisan politics, they remain widely respected as influential elder statesmen with a deep commitment to Nigeria’s unity and long-term stability, having played pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s political and military history.
