Plans for a strategic partnership between Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 presidential race have significantly progressed.
Investigations by Sunday Punch indicate that both Obi and Kwankwaso have established a joint committee tasked with working out the framework for a combined presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
A senior member of the ADC revealed that the initiative for this alliance was championed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to the party insider, Obasanjo not only approved Obi’s move into the ADC but also urged him to collaborate closely with Kwankwaso to secure the party’s presidential and vice-presidential slots.
Obasanjo had openly supported Obi during the 2023 elections, rallying nationwide backing for him against the All Progressives Congress candidate—now President Bola Tinubu.
In his January 1, 2023 open letter, Obasanjo wrote, “None of the contestants is a saint, but when comparing their integrity, track records, insight, experience, discipline and energy they can offer… Peter Obi, as a mentee, stands out.”
Kwankwaso, who has maintained a strong relationship with Obasanjo over the years, previously served as Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term.
Currently, notable figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi are seen as the major presidential contenders within the ADC, even as discussions continue to formally integrate Kwankwaso into the party.
Before switching to the ADC, Obi had declared his intention to serve only one term if elected, a stance said to have encouraged Kwankwaso’s willingness to accept the vice-presidential slot.
Although Kwankwaso has not officially joined the ADC, Sunday Punch learned that early groundwork for the alliance is already underway due to Obasanjo’s involvement.
An authoritative ADC source, speaking anonymously, stated that Obasanjo has also been facilitating Obi’s connections with influential northern political leaders to reinforce the developing partnership.
The source explained, “We know about the alliance even though Kwankwaso is not yet a member of our party. Former President Obasanjo brought them together and remains dedicated to ensuring the partnership succeeds.
“He believes strongly in Obi and has been holding discussions with northern leaders to help them appreciate the value of this alliance.”
Likewise, a prominent figure within the Kwankwasiyya Movement confirmed Obasanjo’s central role, noting that the idea originated from him.
“The former president is directly involved. In fact, he proposed the idea, and we are pleased with the progress being made,” the source disclosed.
