Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and African Democratic Congress chieftain Babachir Lawal has intensified his criticism of Nigeria’s two biggest political parties, arguing that both the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party are heading toward failure before the 2027 general elections.
Lawal made the remarks while welcoming Otunba Olayinka Braimoh, a former Action Alliance governorship candidate in Kogi State, into the ADC. The event became more than a defection ceremony, as it also provided a platform for the former SGF to outline why he believes the country’s political landscape is shifting and why the ADC hopes to benefit from that change.
According to Gossip News Now, Lawal portrayed the PDP as a party trapped in decline and internal disarray, while accusing the APC of becoming a political shelter for individuals trying to avoid scrutiny from anti-corruption authorities. In his assessment, both parties now represent the very failures many Nigerians are increasingly tired of.
He was especially harsh on the ruling party, alleging that the APC has grown comfortable with arrogance and no longer places faith in fair democratic competition. Lawal claimed the party’s confidence appears rooted not in public support, but in the belief that elections can be manipulated in its favour before votes are even cast.
From his perspective, that approach will not hold in 2027. He insisted that Nigerians are becoming more alert and will resist any attempt to undermine the electoral process. For him, the coming election will not simply be a contest between parties, but a broader struggle over whether democracy will function as it should.
Even while inviting more politicians into the ADC, Lawal made it clear that his party would not throw its doors open without caution. He warned that not every defector from the APC or PDP would be embraced, stressing that the ADC must guard its values against politicians whose habits were shaped by what he described as corrupt or undemocratic environments.
He said the ADC wants to project itself as a platform for reform-minded Nigerians rather than merely becoming a gathering point for displaced politicians looking for fresh shelter. That distinction, he suggested, is important if the party hopes to convince the public that it truly offers something different from the older political establishments.
Lawal also used the occasion to cast the ADC as a rescue platform for citizens frustrated by years of poor governance. In his view, Nigeria has reached a point where many voters now understand that the country needs a sharp correction, and he presented the ADC as a vehicle for that political redirection.
Beyond national politics, he turned his criticism toward the Adamawa State Government, faulting Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s administration for what he described as weak developmental impact despite years in office and significant financial inflows. He argued that visible progress in the state has not matched the resources available, using that claim to reinforce his broader criticism of the PDP’s record in power.
Commentary and Analysis
Babachir Lawal’s statement is notable because it reflects a growing effort by smaller opposition platforms to present themselves as serious alternatives ahead of 2027. By attacking both the APC and PDP at once, he is trying to tap into dissatisfaction across the political spectrum rather than limit his message to only one side.
His remarks about the APC being a refuge for people facing EFCC scrutiny are clearly provocative and designed to shape public perception, while his claim that the PDP is collapsing adds to the narrative that Nigeria’s traditional political giants may be more vulnerable than they appear.
At the same time, his warning that the ADC will not accept every defector suggests an awareness of a common opposition problem in Nigeria: parties often grow quickly, but lose identity when they become havens for politicians carrying the same baggage they once criticized. Whether the ADC can truly maintain that discipline may become one of the key tests of its credibility before 2027.
