The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Saturday held its ward congresses across all 192 wards, electing new executives and delegates despite a heavy downpour.

At Oredo Wards I, II, and III in Benin City, where journalists observed proceedings, the exercise recorded a large turnout, enthusiasm, and orderliness as members braved the rain to cast their votes.

State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, who monitored the process alongside members of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee from the national headquarters, described the congresses as peaceful and a testament to the party’s resilience.

“The ward congresses were very peaceful. Members of the PDP were vibrant and very active, electing the 17-member executives in the wards we attended,” Channels Television quoted Aziegbemi as saying.

He admitted initial doubts about turnout but said he was “pleasantly surprised” by members’ dedication.

“I was jittery at first, not knowing what to expect, but I was moved by the enthusiasm. We think PDP is rising, and we believe we will give the APC a run for their money,” he declared, adding that the “abysmal failure of government at both federal and state levels” would pave the way for PDP’s return in 2027.

Chairman of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee, Tariga Tulagha, also commended members for their peaceful conduct and massive participation despite the rain.

“We went out to conduct elections for officers and delegates across all wards, and so far, it has been peaceful with full compliance with the law. The turnout has been impressive,” he said.

Tulagha dismissed claims of internal divisions within the Edo PDP, noting that the voting pattern reflected unity.

“We observed a unity of purpose. If there was division, it would have shown in the voting process. But when motions were raised, the ‘ayes’ were 100 per cent, and the ‘nays’ were zero. The issue of factions does not apply here,” he explained.

The congresses mark a critical step for the PDP in Edo, which has battled internal disputes and defections since the 2020 governorship election. Party leaders say the exercise is part of rebuilding grassroots structures and positioning the PDP as a credible challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
