Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has secured strong backing from Peoples Democratic Party state chairmen as the party moves closer to its national convention in Ibadan. The endorsement signals growing confidence in his influence within the PDP and suggests that many party leaders see him as central to efforts to reposition the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The support was expressed during a meeting in Abuja involving members of the Forum of PDP State Chairmen, led by Edo State party chairman Tony Aziegbemi. Although the gathering was publicly described as a courtesy engagement, political observers viewed it as a carefully timed move to reinforce Makinde’s standing and tighten alliances before the November convention. Gossip News Now reports that the show of solidarity was also meant to project unity at a time when internal divisions continue to unsettle the party.
Aziegbemi used the occasion to deliver a hard-hitting message about the crisis inside the PDP, warning that some elements were working to weaken the party for the benefit of the ruling APC. He portrayed the confrontation not as an ordinary disagreement but as a struggle over the future of the opposition. In his view, those trying to fracture the party are pursuing a dangerous agenda that must be resisted if the PDP hopes to remain competitive in 2027.
At the heart of the tensions is a fierce contest for influence between blocs associated with Makinde and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. Their rivalry has sharpened disagreements over several contentious issues, including the recognition of the Dan Orbih-led South-South Zonal Working Committee, the unresolved status of Ali Odefa in the South-East, and the demand for fresh congresses in some states such as Anambra and Ebonyi. Another major point of dispute remains the legitimacy of Ambassador Umar Damagum’s leadership as National Chairman after moves by the Wike camp to challenge his position.
Even with the hard rhetoric, the state chairmen tried to present themselves as defenders of party cohesion rather than architects of further division. They warned that any attempt to destabilise the PDP before the next general election would only hand an advantage to the APC. At the same time, Aziegbemi softened the tone by saying reconciliation must remain possible, especially for suspended chairmen in states like Imo and Abia who are seen as sympathetic to Wike’s side. That balancing act showed that while loyalties are being declared, some room is still being left for negotiation.
For Makinde, the coming Ibadan convention is shaping up to be a defining political moment. Hosting the event places him in a position of visibility and influence, but it also means he will be judged on whether he can help calm the party’s widening cracks. The gathering is widely expected to be the PDP’s toughest internal examination since the 2023 elections, with both camps treating it as a test of strength and legitimacy.
Party insiders believe the state chairmen’s public endorsement was designed to assure Makinde that he has broad support across the country as the convention approaches. Yet that backing is unlikely to end the power struggle immediately, especially with the Wike faction reportedly accusing his camp of trying to seize too much control over party structures. What is now clear is that the contest is no longer hidden beneath routine party language; it has become an open fight over who will shape the PDP’s direction into 2027.
Commentary and Analysis
The latest endorsement of Makinde reveals more than loyalty to a governor; it reflects a wider battle for the soul of the PDP. The language used by party leaders shows how serious the internal confrontation has become, with each side presenting itself as the true protector of the opposition’s future. While Makinde’s camp appears to have gathered momentum, unity within the party remains fragile and heavily dependent on what happens at the Ibadan convention.
The real challenge for the PDP is not simply choosing which faction is stronger, but whether it can emerge from this struggle with enough credibility to confront the APC in the next general election. If the party remains consumed by internal legitimacy disputes, its message to Nigerians could be weakened. But if the convention produces a workable balance of power, Makinde’s endorsement by the state chairmen may later be seen as one of the key moments that helped reshape the PDP’s path.
