As discussions around Nigeria’s next electoral cycle begin to intensify, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has urged Alex Otti to consider formally joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The appeal was made during a gathering of party supporters in Bende, a community in Abia State. The event combined a town hall engagement with a food distribution initiative organized by the deputy speaker at his country residence.
During his remarks, Kalu emphasized that anyone seeking to work closely with Bola Ahmed Tinubu politically should belong to the same party as the president. According to him, expressing support for the administration while remaining outside the APC sends mixed signals.
He suggested that if Governor Otti were to switch political affiliation and become a member of the ruling party, he would receive strong backing from APC stakeholders throughout Abia State.
Kalu explained that political loyalty must be demonstrated through party membership rather than public declarations alone. In his view, President Tinubu’s political support will remain within the structure of the APC rather than extending to individuals outside the party.
Position on 2027 Governorship Speculation
While addressing supporters, the deputy speaker also spoke about speculation concerning his possible interest in the Abia State governorship election expected in 2027.
He clarified that he has not officially declared any intention to run for the office. Instead, he said he is currently consulting widely with party leaders and stakeholders before making any political decision.
According to Kalu, discussions with the APC’s national leadership and consultations within the party are ongoing, and he intends to follow the guidance of the party structure before taking any step toward contesting.
Concerns Over Online Criticism
Kalu also raised concerns about what he described as persistent negative campaigns against him on social media platforms.
He alleged that individuals working as paid online commentators have been regularly attacking him and spreading narratives aimed at undermining his public image.
The deputy speaker further claimed that some of his community development programs and empowerment initiatives have been misrepresented by critics as early campaigning efforts for the 2027 governorship race.
He dismissed such claims, saying the initiatives are part of his commitment to supporting constituents rather than a strategy for future political contests.
Commentary and Analysis
Kalu’s remarks highlight the growing political maneuvering ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections. Although the election cycle is still some distance away, political leaders are already positioning themselves and building alliances.
His invitation to Governor Otti also reflects the broader competition among political parties to expand their influence at the state level. Party defections and strategic alignments often play a significant role in shaping electoral outcomes in Nigeria.
Observers note that calls for political realignment may intensify as the next election approaches, particularly in states where party control remains competitive. Whether Governor Otti responds to the invitation or maintains his current political stance could influence the political landscape in Abia State over the coming years.
