The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he will not defect to any political party ahead of the 2027 general elections unless he is offered either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
Kwankwaso also criticised reports suggesting that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is planning to move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the development as a painful betrayal of collective political sacrifice.
Addressing NNPP supporters at his residence in Kano on Wednesday, the former governor said his over 40 years in politics would not allow him to accept a vague or disrespectful political arrangement.
He disclosed that the APC had approached him to join the party but failed to present a clear and meaningful proposal that recognised his political weight and the structure he commands nationwide.
“They invited us, but we asked simple questions—what exactly is on the table? Which position is suitable for me? Which one fits the national chairman and his executives who also have dignity and value?” Kwankwaso said.
“None of these questions was answered,” he added.
Kwankwaso stressed that his supporters across the country would only back a political realignment that guarantees him one of the top two positions in the 2027 elections, insisting that anything less would amount to political disrespect.
According to him, accepting a lesser offer after decades of grassroots mobilisation and national relevance would be unacceptable.
He reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to the Kwankwasiyya ideology, which he said is centred on empowering the poor, creating jobs, expanding access to education, improving healthcare delivery, and boosting agricultural productivity.
“Some people think this is about keeping options open, but this time it is a national matter. Kano must remain united so that we can win again,” he stated.
Kwankwaso Condemns Gov Yusuf’s Alleged APC Defection
Reacting to reports that Governor Yusuf may defect to the APC, Kwankwaso expressed shock and disappointment, noting that he was neither consulted nor given any justification for the move.
“This is a lesson for all of us. We believed everyone understood the struggle. Betrayal was never expected,” he said.
He warned that such a move would erase years of political effort invested in reclaiming Kano State from the APC.
“The most painful part is that after all we did to take Kano back from Ganduje and the APC, the governorship is now being handed over to them freely,” Kwankwaso lamented.
Calling for calm, he urged supporters to avoid confrontation and instead engage spiritually and personally to stop the move.
“Keep praying, and if you are in contact with them, advise them to reconsider,” he appealed.
The comments come amid rising political manoeuvring as parties position themselves for the 2027 general elections.
