The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has acknowledged that resolving the 2027 presidential ticket dilemma involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi presents a significant challenge for the party.

Gossip News Now reports that the ambitions of both political heavyweights have raised concerns within the wider ADC coalition.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said that while the situation is not the “greatest threat to democracy,” it is undeniably a major issue the party must confront.

Abdullahi emphasized that the ADC is currently more focused on strengthening its nationwide structures than on selecting a presidential candidate. He noted that the party is working to consolidate its presence across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory as part of its preparations for the next election cycle.

He also clarified that the party’s presidential race is not solely between Atiku and Obi, as several other individuals have expressed interest in contesting on the ADC platform.

Abdullahi said:
“I won’t describe it in extreme terms as the greatest threat to democracy, but is it a conundrum? Yes. Is it a challenge? Yes. Is it something we are concerned about? Absolutely.

“At this moment, nobody in the ADC is discussing who the presidential candidate will be. Our priority has been building real structures across the country so we can contest effectively in all states and the FCT.”

He explained that the party will explore consensus-building when the time comes, but if consensus fails, the ticket will be thrown open to all aspirants.

“And it’s not just about Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi,” he added. “There are other individuals interested in contesting. We must make room for that.”

Abdullahi also revealed that the ADC is holding discussions with other political parties to explore the possibility of forming a broader coalition ahead of 2027.
