Leaders and key stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East have unanimously thrown their support behind President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office.
The South-East APC leaders met on Sunday at the historic Izu Umunne gathering held at the Presidential Hotel, Enugu, declaring that the region would not be influenced by emerging political alignments attempting to challenge Tinubu’s re-election bid.
According to Gossip News Now, this endorsement came just 11 days after former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced his “full membership” in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he pursues his 2027 presidential ambition. Obi pledged to use the platform to “rescue Nigeria from bad leadership that has held the country down.”
At the conclusion of the APC meeting, the South-East leaders issued a communique affirming their “unalloyed, total, and unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as our sole and undisputed presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.”
The motion to endorse Tinubu was moved by former Senate President Pius Anyim and seconded by another former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who described the decision as “both courageous and strategic.”
The leaders pledged that the South-East would no longer scatter votes across different parties, emphasizing that such behavior had historically weakened the region’s political influence at the federal level.
Rejecting Personal Ambition
The communique clearly distanced the South-East from “all activities motivated by the self-serving interests of any individual, regardless of rank or position.”
It stated: “The progress of our zone and our great party cannot be achieved through narrow personal ambitions or actions that fracture collective unity. Any such conduct shall henceforth be regarded as contrary to our shared aspirations and will receive neither endorsement nor support from our zone.”
The leaders added that the political leadership of the region had resolved that “never again will personal ego or self-serving actions dictate the fate of the South-East.”
Why Tinubu and the APC?
The communique explained that the endorsement followed “careful deliberations on national developments, regional challenges, and the strategic role of Ndi Igbo in the country’s political future.”
They described the APC as “the most practical party of choice” for the South-East, noting that alignment with the ruling party would allow the region to negotiate better representation and development outcomes.
“This decision is anchored on the transformative policies of the APC-led Federal Government, the opportunities opened to our region, and the need for strategic alignment with the ruling party to secure our fair share of national resources, infrastructure, appointments, and development,” the communique stated.
They urged all sons and daughters of Igboland, both at home and abroad, to view the APC as the most effective platform to advance their political, economic, and social interests.
No Vote Scattering in 2027
Despite the five South-East states being governed by three different political parties, APC leaders warned against the “dangerous habit” of scattering votes.
They stressed that every vote cast by Ndigbo in 2027, whether within or outside the region, must go to President Tinubu, irrespective of individual ambitions.
The leaders expressed satisfaction with Tinubu’s performance, highlighting his efforts to tackle infrastructural gaps in the South-East. They also commended him for inclusive governance, noting “the elevation of our sons and daughters to key national positions.”
“President Tinubu’s leadership, marked by competence, results, and national cohesion, has earned our deepest respect. We are confident that his continued stewardship will accelerate development in our region and across the nation,” the communique added.
Backing South-East Governors
Stakeholders reaffirmed strong loyalty to the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, alongside other governors in the region.
They praised the governors for “visionary guidance, steady statesmanship, and consistent defense of Ndi Igbo interests at this critical time.”
“We pledge our full support to all five governors as we advance together in backing our visionary President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the communique read.
To achieve their 2027 objective, the leaders resolved to strengthen voter education, registration drives, party structures, and unity-building initiatives to secure what they described as an unprecedented victory for Tinubu.
Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi were tasked with overseeing APC mobilisation in Anambra State, while Governor Uzodimma will continue to coordinate efforts in Imo State.
“Finally, we commit all human, material, and spiritual resources to deliver massive bloc votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu across the five South-Eastern states in 2027,” the communique stated.
Leaders See Paradigm Shift in the South-East
Governor Mbah described the endorsement and growing APC alignment in the South-East as “a paradigm shift grounded in pragmatism,” adding that the region had moved from “standing at the crossroads of history to shaping history itself.”
Governor Nwifuru expressed confidence that by 2027, all South-East governors would be APC members. He urged party leaders to prioritise reconciliation and disciplined management of new members rather than expanding the party further.
The meeting concluded with a call on all Ndi Igbo to rally behind the APC “to build a future where our children can prosper in a Nigeria that truly works for all.”
