In a decisive political move, leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East have publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027, signaling a rejection of former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and his recent alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The announcement was made during a gathering at the Presidential Hotel in Enugu, emphasizing regional unity and strategic alignment with the ruling party.
The South-East APC leaders issued a statement underscoring their “unalloyed and unwavering support” for Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate representing their interests. Former Senate Presidents Pius Anyim and Ken Nnamani moved and seconded the motion, describing the decision as both “courageous and strategic.”
The communique stressed that the region would no longer scatter votes among different parties, a practice historically seen as weakening South-East influence at the federal level. Leaders warned that personal ambitions that undermine collective political unity would no longer receive endorsement. “Never again will personal ego or self-serving actions dictate the fate of the South-East,” the statement affirmed.
Strategic Justification for Supporting Tinubu
APC stakeholders explained that their decision was guided by careful consideration of national developments, regional challenges, and the critical role of Ndigbo in shaping Nigeria’s political future. The party highlighted that alignment with the APC provides practical opportunities for the South-East to secure better representation, access to national resources, and influence over appointments and developmental initiatives.
The communique praised Tinubu’s leadership for inclusive governance and the elevation of qualified sons and daughters of the South-East to national positions. Leaders underscored that “President Tinubu’s leadership, marked by competence, results, and national cohesion, has earned our deepest respect,” emphasizing confidence in his continued stewardship.
Backing Regional Governors
The South-East APC also expressed strong support for the region’s governors, including Hope Uzodimma, Peter Mbah, and Francis Nwifuru. These leaders were commended for guiding the region with “visionary leadership and steady statesmanship,” and were tasked with coordinating voter mobilization, party strengthening, and unity initiatives in preparation for the 2027 elections.
The statement highlighted that Governors Mbah and Nwifuru would lead APC efforts in Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra, while Uzodimma would continue oversight in Imo State. Party officials emphasized that all human, material, and spiritual resources would be mobilized to secure a bloc vote for Tinubu across the South-East.
A New Political Paradigm
Governor Mbah described the endorsement as “a paradigm shift grounded in pragmatism,” marking a transition from historical indecision to proactive influence in shaping Nigeria’s political trajectory. Governor Nwifuru added that by 2027, the expectation is for all South-East governors to align with the APC. Leaders also stressed disciplined management of party expansion and reconciliation of new members to consolidate unity rather than uncontrolled growth.
The meeting concluded with a call for all Ndigbo to rally behind the APC, emphasizing that collective political discipline and strategic alignment with the ruling party are vital to building a prosperous future for the region and the nation.
