2027: ‘Reform Remains the Core Challenge Facing PDP’ — Sowunmi

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has called on party members to reflect on the fundamental issues confronting the party rather than directing blame at individuals.

Sowunmi made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed the PDP’s internal struggles.

According to him, the party’s central problem is the absence of deep and consistent reform, not the actions of any single person.

Sowunmi argued that focusing on scapegoats weakens the party’s ability to address structural flaws, noting that strong institutions and clear processes prevent excesses and abuse of power.

He explained that in well-established systems, such as global financial institutions, leadership roles are governed by strict frameworks that make misconduct nearly impossible, unlike what currently occurs within the party’s internal operations.

The PDP chieftain pointed out that as a party with more than two decades of history—and one that previously governed the country for 16 years—the PDP should possess enough institutional memory to manage its affairs more effectively.

He suggested that time spent in opposition should be used productively to rebuild, reorganise, and reposition the party, rather than remaining consumed by internal conflicts.

Sowunmi also acknowledged that individuals on opposing sides of the party’s internal disputes are largely longtime loyalists who remain committed to the PDP’s ideals, despite their disagreements.
