The Senior Special Assistant (Print Media) to President Bola Tinubu, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, has dismissed growing speculation about the possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with journalists in Kano, Abdulaziz said there was no cause for concern even if Jonathan decides to contest, emphasizing that the former president no longer poses a political threat.
According to him, Jonathan’s defeat as a sitting president in 2015 is proof that he cannot unsettle the current political structure under President Tinubu.
“Somebody who was defeated while he was a sitting president—there is nothing he can do now. Maybe he can come and try his luck. That’s the beauty of democracy; anyone can decide to contest,” he said.
Abdulaziz maintained that the possibility of Jonathan joining the 2027 race does not intimidate anyone, least of all President Tinubu.
“Jonathan is not a threat at all. No one is scared of him—certainly not the President. Someone who couldn’t win while in power cannot be a threat now that he’s far removed from the presidency, aside from other constraints,” he added.
The presidential aide further cautioned Jonathan against allowing political opportunists to exploit his legacy for their own gain.
“I’m sure some people will want to mislead him,” Abdulaziz warned.
“Personally, I’ll say he shouldn’t listen to people who want to destroy him or demystify him by pushing him into a contest that’s already lost before it begins. I don’t see where Jonathan can make an in-road or secure substantial votes in that election.”
Abdulaziz concluded that the Tinubu administration remains focused and unbothered by “political distractions,” reiterating that democracy allows anyone to contest, but not everyone can win.
