Forgery Scandal Escalates PDP Crisis Ahead of November National Convention

Spread the love

Fresh controversy has rocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as internal divisions widen just months before its highly anticipated national convention. The latest development centers on serious allegations of document forgery, further complicating an already tense political environment within the party.

At the heart of the dispute is Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s National Secretary, who has firmly denied authorising a key communication sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The document in question reportedly informed the electoral body of the party’s planned national convention scheduled for mid-November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In formal complaints submitted to INEC, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the office of the Inspector General of Police, Anyanwu insisted that the signature appearing on the August correspondence was fraudulently reproduced without his consent. He emphasized that he had no prior knowledge of the letter, raising concerns about internal sabotage.

The PDP scribe described the incident as a grave violation, warning that such actions could damage the party’s reputation and destabilize preparations for the convention. According to him, the unauthorized use of his identity reflects deeper cracks within the party’s leadership structure.

Gossip News Now reports that the forgery claims have emerged alongside a legal battle initiated by dissatisfied party stakeholders seeking to halt the convention entirely. The suit, filed by prominent figures including Austin Nwachukwu, Amah Abraham Nnanna, and Turnah Alabah George, accuses the current leadership of breaching constitutional procedures and ignoring internal guidelines.

The legal tussle has drawn in key defendants such as INEC, the PDP, and Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, among others. Proceedings in court recently hit a snag after conflicting claims over legal representation created confusion, prompting Justice James Omotosho to postpone the hearing while demanding proof of authority from the lawyers involved.

Adding another layer to the crisis, a faction within the National Working Committee announced a leadership shake-up in the party’s legal department. A letter endorsed by several members declared the removal of Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) as National Legal Adviser, replacing him with Chris Uche (SAN).

However, Ajibade has strongly rejected the decision, arguing that such a move lacks legitimacy without ratification at a properly convened national convention. He maintains that he remains the lawful occupant of the position, thereby intensifying the leadership standoff.

Beyond the legal and administrative disputes, political tensions linked to allies of Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, have further fueled unrest. Disagreements over control of party structures in states like Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Plateau, as well as unresolved zoning arrangements, have deepened divisions among party stakeholders.

Analysis: A Party at a Crossroads

The unfolding events highlight a party grappling with both structural and leadership challenges at a critical moment. Allegations of forgery, internal lawsuits, and contested appointments point to a deeper crisis of trust and coordination within the PDP.

If unresolved, these issues could significantly impact the party’s credibility and preparedness ahead of its national convention. Political observers believe that the coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether the party can restore unity or slide further into factional conflict.

In his final remarks, Senator Samuel Anyanwu reiterated the urgency of addressing the matter, calling for swift intervention by security agencies to identify those responsible and uphold accountability within the system. He stressed that safeguarding the integrity of the party must remain a top priority.
