The recent political shift in Kano State has sparked conversations across party lines, but the Kwankwasiyya Movement appears unfazed. Despite the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the camp loyal to Rabiu Kwankwaso insists its foundation remains solid.

According to Gossip News Now, the spokesperson of the movement, Habibu Saleh, dismissed concerns that the governor’s exit could weaken their political grip. Speaking during a media interaction, he maintained that the structure built around Kwankwaso is far deeper than individual defections.

Saleh drew parallels with past political events in Kano, pointing to a period when Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and several loyalists distanced themselves from the movement. Despite losing key figures at the time, including individuals occupying major political offices, the group managed to regroup and stage a comeback that restored its dominance.

Reframing his message, Saleh suggested that appearances can be misleading in politics, noting that previous setbacks had only strengthened their resolve. He emphasized that even when the movement seemed politically absent, it rebuilt itself strategically and returned to power with renewed strength.

He further argued that the current political arrangement in Kano is not as stable as it appears. Internal disagreements and lack of coordination within the ruling system, he hinted, could create opportunities for the Kwankwasiyya Movement to regain control in future elections.

On the perception of Kwankwaso’s influence, Saleh implied that critics may be underestimating a political figure whose journey has been marked by resilience and repeated comebacks. In his view, the unfolding situation will eventually reveal the true balance of power.

Commentary & Analysis

The unfolding developments in Kano highlight a recurring theme in Nigerian politics—structures often outlive individuals. While Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection may appear significant on the surface, the response from Kwankwasiyya suggests confidence rooted in historical precedent.

For Rabiu Kwankwaso, the narrative remains consistent: political survival through strategic rebuilding. If past events are anything to go by, the movement’s ability to reorganize could once again reshape Kano’s political landscape.

At the same time, cracks within the ruling framework, as pointed out by Saleh, could become a decisive factor. If not addressed, such internal issues may offer opposition forces the leverage they need ahead of future contests.
