Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has suggested that the 2027 presidential election may mark the end of his ambition to lead Nigeria, saying the country’s younger generation should increasingly take responsibility for shaping its political future.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor said his long-term political plans would largely depend on the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

While responding to questions about whether he could seek the presidency again after 2027, Obi indicated that another presidential contest was unlikely, explaining that leadership also requires recognising when it is time to hand over responsibility to a younger generation.

“It depends on who wins,” Obi said.

“But I can tell you, I’m coming to the end of it because I believe that the younger ones should be allowed.”

Age and Capacity Influenced His Position

Explaining the reasons behind his remarks, Obi said the office of the President demands enormous physical strength, mental alertness and sustained energy over several years.

According to him, those realities cannot be ignored when considering future political ambitions.

He noted that he would be approaching 69 years of age by the next election cycle and questioned whether he would still possess the same level of energy required to govern effectively after serving another possible eight-year term.

“I’ll be 68 or 69. So, if you add that to another eight years, I will be 77, or 78. I don’t think I’ll have the energy I have today because that capacity is very important. It’s critical,” he stated.

Beyond discussing his personal political future, Obi used the interview to encourage greater youth participation in national leadership.

He argued that Nigeria’s development depends on creating opportunities for younger citizens to contribute meaningfully to governance and public service.
