Election Watch
Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gathered momentum in Oyo State on Wednesday after Governor Seyi Makinde announced key appointments to coordinate his presidential campaign while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) unveiled its governorship campaign structure.
The latest move signals the beginning of a more organised campaign phase as political parties gradually position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
Makinde Picks Adeniran to Lead Campaign Efforts
At the centre of the announcement is the appointment of Nureni Adeniran, the Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), as the governor’s presidential campaign coordinator in the state.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to the governor.
According to the statement, Adeniran will simultaneously serve as the Director-General of the APM Governorship Campaign Council in Oyo State, giving him responsibility for coordinating both presidential and governorship campaign activities.
Campaign Council Takes Shape
Beyond the appointment of Adeniran, additional campaign officials were also unveiled as part of the party’s preparations.
Former Oyo East Local Government Chairman, Saheed Arowosaye, was named deputy coordinator, while the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Demola Ojo, will serve as Deputy Director-General for the southern zone.
The appointments complete the first layer of the campaign structure expected to coordinate political mobilisation across different parts of the state.
APM Unveils Governorship Candidate
Alongside the campaign appointments, the Allied Peoples Movement also presented its governorship flag bearer for the 2027 election.
The party selected Bimbo Adekanmbi, a former Commissioner for Finance during the administration of the late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi, as its governorship candidate.
His emergence adds another familiar political figure to Oyo’s growing list of contenders expected to participate in the state’s next governorship contest.
Campaign Activities Set to Begin
The statement further disclosed that Governor Makinde will officially inaugurate the presidential campaign council on Friday.
The inauguration is scheduled to take place at the conference room of the governor’s office, where members of the campaign structure are expected to begin coordinating activities ahead of the election season.
The event is expected to formally launch the council’s operational responsibilities across the state.
Related Development
In a separate announcement, Governor Makinde confirmed that Oyo State has taken delivery of two DA42MN-G surveillance aircraft acquired to strengthen aerial security operations.
The governor shared photographs of the aircraft on his Facebook page and thanked officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for their technical support and professional guidance throughout the acquisition process.
According to him, the aircraft will be deployed for surveillance and reconnaissance missions aimed at enhancing security across the state.
Political Perspective
Although the appointments primarily relate to campaign organisation, they also demonstrate that political parties are gradually transitioning from internal planning to operational election preparations.
Establishing campaign councils, assigning regional coordinators and unveiling candidates are often among the earliest indicators that parties are moving into a more structured phase of electoral mobilisation.
At the same time, the separate announcement regarding the surveillance aircraft reflects the governor’s continued emphasis on governance and security while political preparations continue.
What to Watch
Attention will now shift to Friday’s inauguration of the campaign council and the subsequent rollout of campaign activities in Oyo State.
Political observers will also be watching how the APM expands its campaign structure and positions its governorship candidate as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
