The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulrahman Mohammed, has officially cancelled the party’s proposed national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja.
Mohammed announced the decision during a press briefing on Wednesday, explaining that the move was in compliance with the judgment delivered by Justice Omotosho in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025.
He noted that the party had received the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court’s decision and, after a detailed legal review, resolved to suspend the convention pending further judicial clarification.
“The National Leadership of the PDP, under my leadership as Acting National Chairman, in collaboration with our National Secretary, Distinguished Senator Samuel Anyanwu, hereby formally informs the public that we have received the Certified True Copy of the recent judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja,” Mohammed said.
He added that the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), had provided a comprehensive legal opinion on the matter, which formed the basis for the PDP’s appeal before the Court of Appeal.
“In strict adherence to due process and our commitment to fairness, we have lodged an appeal to seek further judicial interpretation in the overall interest of our party, our members, and Nigerian democracy,” he stated.
Mohammed stressed that continuing with the Ibadan convention at this stage would violate the rule of law, warning that such action would not be tolerated.
He confirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — which was a party to the original suit — had been formally notified of the decision to suspend the event, in compliance with the Federal High Court’s directive.
“We have communicated our position to INEC, directing the suspension of the planned convention in line with the judgment,” he said.
The acting chairman also addressed reports of an ex-parte order issued by an Oyo State High Court, clarifying that such an order could not override the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“While we await the Certified True Copy of that order, we must emphasize that an ex-parte order cannot supersede a subsisting Federal High Court judgment. We shall continue to act strictly in line with lawful judicial authority and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Mohammed concluded.
The cancellation marks a significant development in the ongoing internal power tussle within the PDP, as the leadership moves to navigate the party’s legal and organizational challenges ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
