Former Kogi State lawmaker, Dino Melaye, has voiced deep concern over recent developments in Nigeria, warning that the country must not be allowed to collapse.

Speaking on social media on Thursday, Melaye highlighted issues ranging from rumours of a coup, threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump, to what he described as arbitrary and self-serving amendments to national laws.

“Nigeria must not die. The things happening in this country have never happened since 1999,” Melaye wrote. “Rumour of coup; Trump and America’s threat of invasion; and arbitrary and egocentric amendments of extant laws. Enough is enough. In an unjust society, silence is a crime.”

The comments come in the wake of the U.S. recently redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern for the second time, sparking widespread reactions from citizens, diplomats, and international observers.

Trump had warned that unless the Nigerian government swiftly curbs the ongoing bloodshed and attacks by terrorist groups, the U.S. could be forced to intervene militarily to protect vulnerable populations, particularly Christians, within the country.
