Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised comments made by the factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Turaki, SAN, who recently called on U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s political situation.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday while hosting members of the South-South Development Commission led by Chairman Chibudom Nwuche, Wike dismissed Turaki’s remarks as unnecessary and harmful, noting that Nigeria’s democracy remains stable and secure.
Turaki had urged President Trump and other global democratic leaders to “save Nigeria’s democracy” following renewed clashes between rival PDP factions at the party’s national secretariat.
Wike condemned the call as reckless and a threat to national security.
“Imagine calling on Trump to come and save your democracy when you cannot obey a simple court judgment,” Wike said. He accused Turaki’s group of disregarding legal directives and resorting to impunity.
He added that the internal feud within the PDP had no connection to President Bola Tinubu’s government.
“Our democracy is not under threat. People went to court to challenge your actions, yet you choose impunity and want to blame others,” he said.
Wike also faulted Turaki’s allegation that Nigerian Christians were facing genocide, describing the claim as dangerous, baseless, and deserving of immediate scrutiny by security agencies.
He questioned why authorities had not invited Turaki to provide evidence to support such a serious accusation.
“For someone to go on national television and allege genocide, security agencies should demand evidence. But if it’s Wike, it becomes ‘kill him,’” he added.
