Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has strongly criticised newly installed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, for publicly urging former U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s political situation.

Turaki had addressed journalists on Tuesday after gaining access to the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, following a tense confrontation between rival factions. During the briefing, he appealed to Trump and other global powers to “save Nigeria’s democracy,” claiming the crisis within the party reflected a broader threat to the nation’s democratic stability.

He said:
“I want to call on President Trump… what is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians. He should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on other developed nations: come and save Nigeria, come and save democracy.”

His remarks followed hours of standoff involving security operatives and supporters from opposing camps at Wadata Plaza.

Reacting to the video of Turaki’s comments, Onanuga described the appeal as reckless and deeply troubling.

“We shall never forget this video: the day a Nigerian politician committed high treason by calling for a foreign invasion of Nigeria, all because of an intra-party dispute,” he wrote.

Onanuga condemned the statement as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty, stressing that internal party conflicts can never justify calls for foreign intervention.
