The United States chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally asked to participate in a U.S. congressional hearing concerning allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria.
The request was directed to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa, which is scheduled to hold discussions on November 20, 2025, regarding the recent decision by former U.S. President Donald Trump to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
Party Seeks Representation at Congressional Hearing
According to party officials, the APC’s American branch wants to present its perspective during the hearing, arguing that discussions surrounding Nigeria’s security challenges require broader context.
According to Gossip News Now reports that Tai Balofin, chairman of APC USA, confirmed that a formal letter had been sent to Congressman Chris Smith, who leads the subcommittee.
Balofin explained that the organisation is ready to assemble a delegation capable of presenting detailed information about Nigeria’s security situation and recent developments within the country.
Concerns Over Simplified International Narratives
In a statement issued in Abuja, Balofin expressed concern that international discussions sometimes reduce Nigeria’s complex security issues to a single narrative.
He argued that the country’s security challenges involve a combination of factors rather than solely religious conflict.
Among the issues he mentioned were:
- Armed banditry and organised crime networks
- Competition over land and resources
- Climate-related pressures affecting rural communities
- Cross-border criminal activities
According to him, understanding these overlapping factors is essential before any conclusions are drawn about the nature of the violence occurring in different parts of Nigeria.
Delegation Plans to Present Security Developments
Balofin noted that if the request is granted, the APC delegation would highlight developments that it believes demonstrate progress in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
The presentation is expected to focus on several areas:
- Efforts to dismantle terrorist groups
- Establishment of early-warning systems in local communities
- Programs encouraging cooperation between religious groups
- Reports indicating reduced attacks in certain conflict zones
He added that some of these improvements have been acknowledged by both local authorities and international observers.
Proposal for Stronger U.S.–Nigeria Cooperation
Beyond addressing allegations of persecution, the APC USA chapter also plans to advocate deeper collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in tackling security challenges.
Areas of cooperation they intend to propose include intelligence sharing, security assistance, and humanitarian support for communities affected by violence.
Balofin emphasised that stronger partnerships between both countries could help protect citizens regardless of religious background while reinforcing diplomatic ties.
Commentary and Analysis
The request by APC USA highlights how international perceptions of Nigeria’s security situation are increasingly shaping diplomatic discussions.
While advocacy groups and some foreign policymakers have raised concerns about religious persecution, Nigerian officials and their allies often argue that the violence is rooted in broader socioeconomic and criminal factors.
If APC USA is allowed to testify before the U.S. Congress, the hearing could provide lawmakers with multiple perspectives on the issue, potentially influencing future policy decisions regarding Nigeria’s international classification and bilateral relations.
As debates continue, analysts note that presenting comprehensive data and balanced viewpoints will be essential for ensuring that discussions about Nigeria’s security landscape remain accurate and constructive.
