The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the cancellation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s planned trips to South Africa and Angola, citing the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria, as a “superficial gesture.”
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the opposition party argued that the cancelled trips do nothing to tackle the worsening security situation across the country.
Ememobong described the President’s decision as “the latest and boldest example of tokenism,” claiming it may seem sympathetic but fails to address the escalating insecurity affecting Nigerians daily.
“If the APC-led Presidency disagrees with this position, then we demand that President Tinubu temporarily relocate to Kebbi State and other regions experiencing armed conflict in Northern Nigeria,” he said.
He added that such a move would compel security agencies to act more decisively and boost the morale of troops on the front lines.
“As President and Commander-in-Chief, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu must not remain in the comfort of the Presidential Villa while 25 schoolgirls have been abducted and their whereabouts remain unknown,” Ememobong stated.
The PDP also linked recent attacks in Kwara State to the broader climate of fear confronting Nigerians, accusing the administration of responding with “denials, rationalized explanations, empty assurances, and token gestures” such as the President’s cancelled international trips.
