Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has expressed willingness to play a leadership role in Nigerian football, but he insists he will only engage with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) if the system is transparent and free from corruption.

Mikel Obi made the remarks following Nigeria’s recent disappointment in failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, describing the setback as a symptom of deeper issues within the sport.

He believes Nigerian football needs a comprehensive overhaul rather than just a change of personnel.

Reflecting on his long service to the nation, the 37-year-old midfielder said his commitment to the country has been unwavering.

“One thing I have always done since my early days is fight for the country. I don’t know how many players have done that like I have, through the U17, U20, and the senior national team,” Mikel Obi told Arise TV.
“Years of sacrifice. I have never once said no to my country.”

Mikel emphasized that he is willing to contribute to reforming the sport, but only in an environment that allows him to speak openly and advocate for meaningful change.

“When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready. But I won’t have corruption tied to me. I am never going to do that if I am going to say yes.
“If you want us to move forward, you must ensure things are done properly—bring in the right people, those with the same direction and mindset, so players coming home to play have a good environment to perform,” he added.

Mikel Obi has already gained some administrative experience. In July 2023, he was appointed Honorary Adviser on Sports in Plateau State by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, a role that has allowed him to contribute to sports planning and grassroots development.

During his illustrious playing career, Mikel captained Nigeria to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, won an Olympic bronze medal in 2016, led the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and earned 91 caps before retiring after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Having progressed through the U17 and U20 national teams before becoming senior captain, Mikel remains a reference point and inspiration for many young Nigerian footballers.
