Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, on Wednesday called on key opposition figures to form a strategic alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing it as a vital “rescue mission” for Nigeria.
Momodu delivered the keynote address at the closing lecture of a week-long celebration in Jada, organised to mark Abubakar’s birthday. During the speech, he traced the former Vice President’s political journey, highlighting his democratic credentials and commitment to non-violence.
A statement from Abubakar’s media office quoted Momodu saying:
“During the 1993 SDP primary, Atiku stepped down for my adopted father, MKO Abiola. This allowed him to win the ticket. Atiku is not a common politician; he has been betrayed many times and always chooses peace and patience.
“He is not a violent politician; you will never see him parade thugs around him. Little wonder God has blessed him with excellent health in addition to business success. Atiku pursues his ambition with clarity, without violence.”
Momodu also praised Abubakar’s legal battles over contested elections, noting that they have strengthened Nigeria’s constitutional law framework.
He warned against discouraging quality leadership during critical national moments:
“When we refuse to encourage good people, the worst amongst us thrive.”
Describing Atiku as “a great manager of men and resources,” Momodu highlighted his courage in standing up against military excesses and governance lapses, even when silence would have been politically safer.
He concluded by urging a coalition of political and civic forces to rally behind the former Vice President:
“No one is better prepared to lead this nation than Atiku at this time.”
