Arise TV host Oseni Rufai has shared insights into the monthly earnings of Nigerian ambassadors, following President Bola Tinubu’s recent submission of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for screening.
The latest batch included high-profile names such as former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, Reno Omokri, and former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, following an earlier submission of three nominees.
In a tweet, Rufai explained that ambassador salaries fall under the Consolidated Diplomatic, Consular and Foreign Service Cadre Salary Structure used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ambassadors are typically assigned to Grade Level 17 (GL 17) and receive additional allowances when posted abroad. While the basic pay may appear modest compared to diplomats in other countries, allowances significantly enhance the total package.
Factors such as the country of posting, experience, and exchange rate fluctuations influence overall earnings.
According to Rufai, the basic monthly pay for an ambassador ranges between ₦800,000 and ₦1.2 million, translating to an annual salary of ₦9.6 million to ₦14.4 million. These figures align with other top officers in public service after adjustments for inflation and the 2025 minimum wage of ₦70,000.
Rufai emphasized that the basic salary alone does not reflect the full earnings of an ambassador. Those posted abroad receive additional allowances to cover high living costs, hardship, and official duties, which can bring their total monthly earnings to ₦2 million–₦5 million, depending on the country of assignment.
