A federal legislator from Sokoto State has recommended that Nigeria consider appointing experienced retired military officers as ambassadors to countries considered strategically important for defence cooperation.
The proposal was made by Abdussamad Dasuki, who represents Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Dasuki directed his appeal to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the administration to explore the expertise of retired military personnel when making future diplomatic appointments.
Leveraging Military Experience in Diplomacy
The lawmaker explained that Nigeria has a large number of retired senior officers who possess extensive operational knowledge and leadership experience from years of service in the armed forces.
According to Gossip News Now, he believes such individuals could play a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s defence diplomacy with foreign governments.
He noted that these officers have undergone rigorous strategic training and have also commanded major operations during their careers.
Because of this background, Dasuki argued that they are well positioned to represent the country in nations where defence cooperation and security partnerships are particularly important.
Role in Defence Negotiations
In his remarks, the lawmaker pointed out that diplomatic postings to certain countries often involve discussions on military cooperation and procurement.
He suggested that retired officers could bring valuable insight to these negotiations, especially when Nigeria seeks to acquire advanced equipment needed to confront modern security threats.
According to him, experienced military figures would understand the operational needs of the armed forces and could effectively communicate those requirements during international discussions.
Among the areas he mentioned were:
- procurement of modern surveillance equipment
- access to reconnaissance drones and armed UAVs
- deeper security partnerships with allied countries
Dasuki explained that ambassadors with practical knowledge of warfare and counterinsurgency strategies could strengthen Nigeria’s bargaining position in such negotiations.
Presidential Authority and Strategic Considerations
While making the proposal, the legislator acknowledged that the appointment of ambassadors remains the constitutional responsibility of the President.
However, he argued that Nigeria’s current security challenges require innovative approaches to foreign policy and diplomatic representation.
He noted that insecurity has persisted in different parts of the country for many years, including challenges related to insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry.
In his view, a strategic adjustment in the selection of envoys could support broader national security objectives.
Commentary and Analysis
The suggestion reflects a growing conversation about how diplomacy can complement military strategy in addressing national security challenges.
Many countries deploy former defence officials or military leaders as ambassadors in regions where security cooperation plays a major role in bilateral relations.
Supporters of the idea believe that individuals with military backgrounds may better understand defence logistics, procurement systems, and international security frameworks.
However, critics often argue that diplomatic roles require a combination of negotiation skills, political awareness, and cultural diplomacy that extends beyond military experience.
If adopted, Dasuki’s proposal could reshape the composition of Nigeria’s diplomatic corps by integrating more defence-oriented expertise into key foreign missions.
