Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has responded sharply to comments made by Jubril A. Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, after a social media post about Wizkid’s upcoming Lagos concert stirred controversy online.
The disagreement began when Gawat shared promotional material for Wizkid’s highly anticipated December 28 performance at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos. The post attracted attention from fans and quickly ignited conversations among supporters of the two global music stars.
According to Gossip News Now, the governor’s aide accompanied the concert announcement with the Yoruba phrase “Ọmọ wa ni,” loosely translated as “he is our own,” which many fans interpreted as an expression of pride in the Grammy-winning singer.
Social Media Comments Trigger Debate
The post soon became a discussion hub among fans celebrating Wizkid’s achievements.
One commenter described the singer as “the face of Lagos,” a remark that Gawat appeared to agree with when he replied that the state was proud of the artist.
However, the conversation took a different direction when another social media user asked about Davido’s standing, implying that both musicians represent Lagos’ entertainment identity.
In response, Gawat reiterated that his principal—the Lagos State governor—was proud of Wizkid, a statement that eventually drew Davido into the exchange.
Davido Responds
Reacting publicly, Davido suggested that the aide was unnecessarily holding onto past tensions.
In his response, the singer urged Gawat to move on from old disputes and stop prolonging disagreements online.
He wrote that it had been over a year since their previous confrontation and encouraged the government official to “let it go” and focus on positive engagement.
History of Online Tensions
The disagreement did not emerge in isolation.
Both figures previously clashed in September 2024 during political discussions surrounding the Edo State governorship election.
At the time, Davido criticised Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it in harsh terms.
Gawat, who is known for his vocal support of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), responded with indirect remarks that led to a heated exchange between the two on social media.
That earlier incident also involved references to Governor Sanwo-Olu, further intensifying the feud.
Commentary and Analysis
The latest exchange highlights how Nigeria’s entertainment and political spaces often intersect on social media platforms.
Celebrities such as Davido and Wizkid command massive followings, meaning that even casual remarks about them can quickly escalate into nationwide conversations.
At the same time, government officials who actively engage online frequently find themselves at the centre of public debates involving fans and cultural figures.
While the dispute appears to stem from a promotional post, it also reflects the long-standing rivalry narratives between the fan bases of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
Ultimately, the situation demonstrates how a simple concert promotion can spark broader discussions about identity, loyalty, and influence within Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
