Media Aide Clarifies Reason Behind Atiku’s Visit to Goodluck Jonathan

Recent speculation surrounding a meeting between two prominent Nigerian leaders has been clarified after aides explained the real reason behind the encounter. Atiku Abubakar paid a visit to Goodluck Jonathan shortly after the latter returned to the country from an international assignment.

Photos from the meeting surfaced online after Atiku shared them on his social media page. In the accompanying message, he described the interaction as a pleasant reunion, noting that the conversation took place soon after Jonathan returned from a diplomatic engagement in Guinea-Bissau.

Because the purpose of the visit was not initially explained, many observers interpreted it as a possible political meeting. The development sparked debate within political circles, especially given the current climate of alliance-building ahead of future elections.

Aide Says Visit Had No Political Agenda

Responding to the speculation, Atiku’s media adviser Paul Ibe clarified that the visit was not related to politics.

According to him, the former vice president simply wanted to check on Jonathan following the tense circumstances he experienced while on assignment abroad. He explained that the two leaders had not had the opportunity to meet since Jonathan returned from the mission.

Ibe emphasised that the visit was motivated by concern for Jonathan’s wellbeing rather than discussions about political collaboration or strategy.

Jonathan’s Office Unaware of Meeting Details

The spokesperson to the former president, Ikechukwu Eze, also commented briefly on the development. He indicated that he was not present during the conversation and therefore could not provide information about the topics discussed.

This response further reinforced the explanation that the meeting was informal and private.

Background: Jonathan’s Mission in Guinea-Bissau

The visit came shortly after Jonathan returned from an international election observation mission in Guinea-Bissau. The former Nigerian leader had travelled to the country as part of a joint monitoring delegation involving several regional organisations.

Jonathan was participating in a mission organised by the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, and the West African Elders Forum.

During the election period, a coup attempt created tension in the country, leaving members of the international delegation—including Jonathan—temporarily stranded on November 26 before the situation stabilised.

Although Atiku’s team insists the meeting had no political undertones, interactions between high-profile Nigerian political figures often attract intense public scrutiny. Such visits are frequently interpreted as signals of potential alliances or strategic consultations.
