The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to expand its governorship tally to 26 with the imminent defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The move follows Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, who is already regarded as aligned with the APC, pending his formal reception into the party.
A source within the APC National Working Committee (NWC) confirmed that Governor Mutfwang has finalized his decision to switch allegiance ahead of the 2027 general elections and has already met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The governor, who had repeatedly expressed loyalty to the PDP, has now made his decision. He informed the National Chairman last Tuesday, and was subsequently taken to meet the President on Sunday,” the source told The Nation.
The NWC official explained that APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda—Mutfwang’s opponent in the last governorship election—facilitated the meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“Governor Mutfwang has met with the President at Aso Villa following his notification to the chairman. He will be formally received into the APC very soon,” the source added, dismissing speculation that the defection faced resistance from Prof. Yilwatda.
The party source also confirmed that Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas is now considered an APC member, bringing the party’s total number of governors to 26.
“Kefas’ official reception was postponed out of sensitivity to the national mood, but he is already part of APC. With Mutfwang joining, the party’s governorship count rises to 26,” the official stated.
