A senior member of Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress and federal legislator, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has emphasized that supporters of the late former president Muhammadu Buhari will continue to advocate accountability within the ruling party as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Doguwa, who represents Kano State in the House of Representatives Nigeria and leads the Northern caucus in the chamber, made the remarks during a public event held in Abuja.

The occasion marked the presentation of a book titled Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, written by former Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed.

While addressing attendees, Doguwa stressed that loyalty to a political party should not prevent members from offering honest feedback to those in government.

According to him, constructive criticism is necessary if the party hopes to maintain public trust and remain responsive to the needs of citizens.

He explained that Buhari’s political allies intend to continue raising concerns whenever policies or actions appear disconnected from the expectations of ordinary Nigerians.

In his view, such openness will help prevent voter dissatisfaction during future elections.

Doguwa argued that reminding leaders of their responsibilities is an essential part of sustaining a healthy political system.

He also reflected on the political legacy of former president Buhari, noting that the late leader remained committed to the APC throughout his life.

According to Doguwa, Buhari never abandoned the party that helped bring him to power.

He described that loyalty as a principle that continues to guide many of the former president’s supporters, particularly across Northern Nigeria.

The lawmaker added that Buhari’s followers remain determined to preserve the values associated with his leadership, including a focus on social welfare and support for vulnerable populations.

He further expressed confidence that political actors in the North would continue to cooperate with the APC-led government.

Doguwa suggested that traditional rulers and religious leaders in the region also play an important role in encouraging citizens to remain engaged in governance and national development.

The Abuja event attracted a number of prominent political figures and public officials.

Among those present were Seyi Makinde and former APC national chairman Bisi Akande.

Also in attendance was Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Other dignitaries included former Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari.

The gathering further featured the presence of former National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno.

Journalist and former presidential spokesman Segun Adeniyi delivered a review of the book during the event.

Traditional leaders were also represented, including the Emir of Argungu, alongside representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Commentary and Analysis

Doguwa’s remarks reflect an ongoing conversation within political parties about the balance between loyalty and accountability.

While ruling parties often emphasize unity, internal criticism can serve as a mechanism for improving governance and maintaining credibility with voters.

The reference to Muhammadu Buhari’s legacy also illustrates how former leaders continue to influence political discourse even after leaving office.

In Nigeria’s political environment, alliances built around influential figures frequently shape party dynamics and regional support bases.

As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections, discussions about performance, accountability, and voter expectations are likely to become increasingly prominent.

Observers note that the ability of political parties to respond to such internal dialogue may play a significant role in determining their electoral prospects in the coming years.
