Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode has shared her harrowing struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, revealing how she masked her pain for years.
In an Instagram post, the actress disclosed that she battled depression and felt suicidal for nearly three years, all while appearing fine to the outside world.
“My whole body was shutting down. I showed up every day as if nothing was wrong, but inside, I was struggling and dying. Depression taught me how powerful joy can be; it is truly medicine,” she wrote.
Juliana reflected on the misconceptions people often have about depression and suicide.
“If you’ve never experienced depression, you might downplay what it feels like. If you’ve never been suicidal, you might think those who take their life are selfish, whereas to them, it feels like the only escape,” she said.
She also emphasized the role of therapy and faith in her recovery.
“Therapy is great, and I attended sessions too, but sometimes you need to return to your Maker for the ultimate healing—and guess what? It’s free. You just need to be vulnerable and ask, ‘Fix me, Lord.’”
Olayode expressed gratitude for her healing and shared her message to encourage others going through similar struggles.
“I thank God for complete healing and wholeness. I’m sharing this because of the numerous DMs I receive from people battling depression and suicidal thoughts. It’s not the end. Don’t listen to that dark voice in your head. The sun will rise again. Give all your depressive and suicidal thoughts to God. Tell Him everything. He will help you—I promise.
“This is a vulnerable post, but I feel you. Don’t give up. What you’re experiencing is part of life, and it cannot consume you. You have the strength and capacity to overcome it and come out whole.”
