The Kebbi State Government has denied allegations that it is involved in the ongoing ordeal of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
Gossip News Now reports that Malami is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The anti-graft agency reportedly invited Malami on November 28 over issues related to the recovery of the Abacha loot during his time as Attorney General of the Federation.
Malami had earlier disclosed that his interrogation by the EFCC was productive, maintaining that the allegations against him were “fabricated.”
However, he returned to the commission on December 8 and has remained in EFCC custody after allegedly failing to meet his bail conditions.
Amid speculation that Malami’s detention may be politically motivated—especially following accusations and counter-accusations between him and the Kebbi State Government over security matters—the state government has distanced itself from the issue.
Speaking to Punch, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, dismissed claims of government involvement, describing them as mischievous.
“There is nothing like that. The Kebbi State Government has no hand in Malami’s case; in fact, the matter predates this administration,” he said.
He explained that several petitions were filed against Malami when he declared interest in the governorship of the state, noting that the petitions did not even originate from Kebbi State but from Abuja and some of Malami’s associates.
“Anyone claiming the Kebbi State Government is involved in Malami’s ordeal is being mischievous. Such a person is wicked and heartless, because the state government does not even know the full details of what is happening with his case,” he added.
