Claims Linking Kebbi Govt to Malami’s Case Are Wicked – State Government

Spread the love

The administration of Kebbi State has firmly rejected speculation suggesting it played any role in the legal troubles currently facing former Nigerian Attorney General Abubakar Malami.

Malami is presently being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which has been questioning him over matters linked to the recovery and management of funds associated with the late military ruler Sani Abacha.

Reports indicate that the EFCC first invited the former justice minister on November 28 to respond to questions surrounding the handling of assets recovered during his tenure as Attorney General of the Federation.

After the initial session with investigators, Malami reportedly described the interaction as constructive and insisted that the accusations being raised against him were baseless and fabricated.

However, the matter took another turn when he returned to the anti-graft agency on December 8. Since then, he has remained in custody after allegedly failing to fulfill the bail conditions set by the commission.

The situation quickly attracted political speculation, especially because Malami has previously been involved in public disagreements with the Kebbi State government over issues related to security and governance in the state.

Some observers began suggesting that the state administration might be influencing events behind the scenes. Those claims have now been dismissed by officials within the government.

Responding to the allegations, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, described the accusations as misleading.

According to him, the government of Kebbi State has no connection whatsoever with the EFCC investigation involving Malami.

He emphasized that the case began long before the current administration took office and therefore cannot be linked to the state government’s activities.

Idris also pointed out that several petitions regarding Malami’s conduct had already been submitted during the period when the former minister expressed interest in contesting the governorship position in Kebbi State.

In addition, he noted that the petitions reportedly came from sources outside Kebbi, including individuals in Abuja and some people believed to be close associates of the former minister.

The spokesperson criticized individuals spreading rumors that the state government was responsible for Malami’s difficulties, describing such claims as malicious and unfair.

He further stressed that the Kebbi administration is not even fully aware of the specific details surrounding the ongoing investigation.

Commentary and Analysis

The unfolding situation highlights the complex intersection between politics and anti-corruption investigations in Nigeria. When prominent political figures face scrutiny from agencies like the EFCC, speculation about political motivations often follows.

In Malami’s case, the rumors linking the Kebbi State government to the investigation appear to stem partly from previous tensions between the former minister and state officials.

However, without clear evidence connecting the state administration to the investigation, such claims remain largely speculative.

The episode also reflects how political rivalry can influence public perception of legal proceedings. For observers, distinguishing between legitimate investigations and politically driven narratives can sometimes be challenging.

Ultimately, the EFCC’s investigation and any potential legal outcomes will depend on evidence and judicial processes rather than political commentary.
