Ademola Lookman has stressed that the Super Eagles remain fully focused on surpassing their previous achievement as Nigeria kicks off its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Morocco.

Nigeria narrowly missed out on the trophy in the last edition, losing 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final. Despite the heartbreak, Lookman was one of the tournament’s standout performers, scoring three goals, providing an assist, and earning a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

The 28-year-old Atalanta winger is expected to play a central role as Nigeria aims for a fourth African title. Lookman emphasized that unity and belief within the squad will be key to achieving success.

“Last time, we came so close in Abidjan, but we didn’t win. Maintaining the togetherness and unity in the squad is crucial to keep us going,” Lookman told Elegbete TV.
“We have to show quality in games and demonstrate our collective fight. Once that comes together, things will be great.”

Nigeria will open their Group C campaign on Tuesday against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania, with kick-off scheduled for 6:30 pm Nigerian time.

Victor Osimhen also sounded a determined note ahead of the encounter, describing the match as a battle that demands full commitment.

“It’s all about going to war. Tuesday is the first game, and we will give everything. We are not underrating anyone in our group, but we are among the favourites in this tournament,” the Galatasaray striker told Nigerian journalist Kelechi Anyikude.
“We will give our all to realise the dream of winning AFCON. It won’t be easy, and there’s still a long way to go, but I’m confident in this squad.”

Osimhen will be looking to improve on his previous AFCON performance, where he scored once and provided one assist in seven matches.
