Nigeria’s Super Eagles have initiated discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding bonus payments for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), pushing for an enhanced package in light of the recent rise in tournament prize money.

Sources familiar with the talks revealed to SCORENigeria that the NFF has proposed a performance-based bonus scheme, where payments increase progressively as the team advances through the competition in Morocco.

The players, however, are reportedly advocating for a higher total payout, arguing that the current incentives do not adequately reflect the tournament’s growing financial scale.

This move comes in the wake of CAF’s announcement that the 2025 AFCON champions will now receive $10 million—a notable increase from the previous edition, where winners Côte d’Ivoire pocketed $7 million, and Nigeria, as runners-up, received $4 million in 2023.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, 26, following remarks from Kocaelispor forward Serdar Dursun. Speaking on Ertem Şener’s YouTube channel, Dursun commended Osimhen’s physical attributes but questioned his finishing compared to his club teammate at Galatasaray, Mauro Icardi.

“Osimhen is a great player. Physically, he’s number one as a striker,” Dursun said via Habersarikirmizi. “He has incredible sprinting power and physical quality. However, his finishing isn’t very good. Icardi’s finishing is better.”

The Nigerian forward now has the opportunity to respond to these critiques on the field when the Super Eagles kick off their AFCON campaign against Tanzania today at 6:30 p.m.
