The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated that it will not recognise the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing existing court judgments and unresolved legal proceedings arising from the party’s leadership dispute.

INEC made its position known in a letter dated December 22, 2025, signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony. In the correspondence, the commission said it could not act on requests to acknowledge or upload on its official website the list of national officers said to have been elected at the PDP National Convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to the electoral body, its decision is guided by subsisting court rulings and ongoing litigation relating to the PDP’s internal leadership crisis.

INEC emphasised that recognising any factional leadership while the matter remains before the courts would be inappropriate and contrary to the rule of law.

The commission further noted that granting recognition to one group amid unresolved judicial processes would amount to prejudging the outcome of the cases and undermining the authority of the courts.

Part of the letter stated that, in view of the pending suits, the request before the commission was prejudiced and could not be considered until the appeals are fully determined.

INEC stressed that in obedience to existing court orders and respect for the rule of law, it is unable to recognise or update the list of national officers said to have emerged from the PDP National Convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025.
