Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has made it clear that he will not support President Bola Tinubu’s possible re-election campaign in 2027, emphasizing the need to preserve political independence and democratic competition in Nigeria.
The governor disclosed his stance during a press interaction in Ibadan, where he addressed recent political developments and growing speculation about alignments ahead of the next presidential election.
Makinde used the opportunity to respond to comments linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing the former Rivers State governor of attempting to influence the political direction of others within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Makinde, no individual should assume the authority to determine the political choices of others within the party or the broader democratic space.
He insisted that every political figure must retain the freedom to decide which candidate or platform they wish to support.
During the briefing, the governor also narrated details of a previous meeting that involved President Bola Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, and several other political figures.
Makinde said he was surprised by remarks allegedly made by Wike during that meeting.
According to the Oyo governor, Wike reportedly stated that he would ensure the PDP worked in support of President Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Makinde said he found the statement unexpected and strongly disagreed with the idea that the opposition party could be positioned to serve the interests of a ruling party candidate.
He stressed that while Wike has the right to support any political figure he chooses, such decisions cannot be imposed on others.
The governor therefore reaffirmed that he would not align himself with any arrangement that compromises the independence of his party.
Makinde further explained that his decision is rooted in a broader concern about the direction of Nigeria’s democratic system.
He warned that weakening opposition parties could gradually push the country toward a one-party structure, which he believes would undermine democratic accountability.
The governor also clarified that President Tinubu himself did not request Wike’s intervention on behalf of the PDP.
According to him, the proposal reportedly came from the FCT minister without any indication that the president had initiated such a plan.
This clarification, Makinde noted, was necessary to avoid misinterpretation of the circumstances surrounding the discussion.

Both Makinde and Wike were previously members of the influential group of governors known as the G5.
