The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced plans to formally receive Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, into the party in January following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, disclosed the development on Monday, December 22, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Crest Hotel in Jos, Plateau State. He recalled earlier announcing Mutfwang’s defection during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

“The entry of Governor Caleb Mutfwang into the APC will further galvanise and consolidate our party. Plateau State has effectively become an APC state,” Yilwatda said. He further urged members to actively participate in the ongoing electronic registration exercise to solidify their status as bona fide party members ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former Plateau State Governor and serving senator, Simon Lalong, commended party members for their loyalty and resilience, assuring them that they would continue to be respected and included in all political arrangements. APC State Chairman, Hon. Rufus Bature, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of maintaining internal cohesion while respecting party leadership decisions.

The meeting was attended by numerous prominent party figures, including Senator Diket Plang; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ahmed Idris Wase; Dr Babayo Gagdi; Hon. John Dafa’an; Hon. Dalyop Fom; and the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Naanlong Daniel. Other notable attendees included Senator I.D. Gyang, Victor Lar, Hezekiah Dimka, former Secretary to the State Government S.D. Lot, Dr Cyril Tsenyil, Dr Umar Mantu, Prof. Artu, and retired General John Sura.

Mutfwang confirmed that his decision to join the APC was influenced by persistent leadership and structural crises within the PDP. Speaking at a separate meeting with political appointees and stakeholders at the Plateau Government House in Jos, he revealed that President Bola Tinubu personally persuaded him to defect.

“I pay my respects to President Tinubu for honouring our earlier decision not to move to the APC and still maintaining a cordial relationship with us,” Mutfwang said. He added that several APC governors and influential figures had also encouraged him to join the party, but he remained in the PDP until recent developments prompted a reassessment of his position.
