Former Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has commended Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze for their standout performances in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in their AFCON 2025 opener.

Aiyegbeni highlighted the duo’s influence and energy as crucial to Nigeria edging a competitive Tanzanian side.

Iwobi impressed with a commanding display in midfield, orchestrating play and providing the assist for Semi Ajayi’s opening goal. The Fulham midfielder controlled the tempo and linked attacks effectively, delivering one of his most assured performances for the national team.

Chukwueze also drew attention with his pace and creativity on the wing, testing the Tanzanian defence and coming close to scoring before being substituted for Moses Simon in the 59th minute.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Aiyegbeni praised the pair’s vision and willingness to take responsibility in possession.

“You have in Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi, and so far so good. They are creating chances for Osimhen, who was just unlucky today, but we still need creativity in midfield,” Aiyegbeni told News Central TV.

Iwobi’s performance reinforced his pivotal role for the Super Eagles. At 29, he has become Nigeria’s most capped player with 92 appearances, scoring 10 goals for the national team.

Chukwueze, who has 52 caps and seven goals for Nigeria, continues to grow into a key contributor, providing width, pace, and attacking impetus for the team.
