No Plan for National Caretaker Committee in PDP — Wabara Clarifies

Spread the love

The leadership structure of the Peoples Democratic Party remains unchanged, according to Senator Adolphus Wabara, who dismissed circulating claims that the party intends to establish a national caretaker committee.

Wabara, who currently serves as Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, described the reports as inaccurate and urged members not to be misled by speculation about changes to the party’s national leadership.

Board of Trustees Denies Caretaker Arrangement

Speaking on the matter, Wabara clarified that the party has not considered any proposal to introduce an interim leadership structure.

According to him, the Board of Trustees — regarded as the party’s guiding authority — has not received any official communication suggesting the formation of a caretaker committee.

He insisted that the rumours being circulated about such a move are unfounded.

National Working Committee Remains in Charge

Wabara emphasised that the party’s National Working Committee continues to operate as the legitimate leadership body.

The committee currently led by Tanimu Turaki, he noted, emerged from the party’s national convention held in Ibadan and therefore retains constitutional authority.

From his perspective, the leadership arrangement remains valid and recognised within the party’s internal structure.

Allegations of External Interference

The former Senate President also suggested that individuals spreading the caretaker committee narrative may be acting with the intention of destabilising the opposition party.

He alleged that some of these actors could be working alongside outside interests to weaken the party from within.

Such actions, he said, risk creating confusion among party members and supporters.

Role of the Board of Trustees

Within the PDP’s organisational structure, the Board of Trustees serves as the custodian of the party’s principles and assets.

Wabara explained that the board functions as a moral guide to ensure the party operates according to its constitutional framework.

For that reason, he argued, any major leadership restructuring would require the board’s knowledge and involvement.

Awaiting Judicial Decision

The party leadership is also waiting for a court ruling related to ongoing internal disputes.

Wabara assured party members that the PDP would abide by the outcome of the legal process once a final judgment is delivered.

He emphasised that respect for the rule of law remains central to the party’s democratic values.

Warning Against Weakening Opposition Politics

Beyond the immediate leadership debate, Wabara expressed concern about the broader implications of destabilising opposition parties.

He warned that attempts to undermine political alternatives could weaken Nigeria’s democratic system.

According to him, a healthy democracy requires a vibrant opposition capable of offering credible alternatives to the ruling government.

Commentary and Analysis

The controversy surrounding a potential caretaker committee reflects the wider tensions currently affecting several political parties in Nigeria.

Leadership disputes, factional disagreements and legal challenges have become recurring themes in the country’s party politics.

For the PDP, maintaining internal unity may prove essential as it seeks to remain competitive in future elections.

At the same time, Wabara’s comments highlight the strategic importance of organisational stability in opposition politics.

Without clear leadership and internal cohesion, opposition parties may struggle to mobilise supporters or present a unified political agenda.

As Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle, how effectively parties manage internal conflicts could significantly influence the broader political landscape.
