Why Some ‘Wack’ Artists Out-Earn Talented Musicians — 2Baba Explains

Veteran Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, widely known as 2Baba, has dismissed the idea that some musicians are “wack,” insisting that success in the industry goes far beyond raw talent.

In a video currently circulating on social media, the singer explained that every song is deliberately created to evoke a particular emotion or connect with a specific audience, making the label “wack artist” largely meaningless.

According to 2Baba, several artists often criticised for lacking talent end up being more financially successful because they understand the business side of music better than their more gifted counterparts.

He noted that music success is not determined solely by vocal ability or lyrical depth, but by how well the art is packaged, promoted, and sold to the public.

“Every song is designed to create a feeling or mood,” he said. “There’s really no such thing as a wack artist. Many of those people called wack are actually more bankable because they understand that music is not just about the art, but the marketing of that art.”

The award-winning singer added that no matter how talented a musician may be, it is impossible to appeal to everyone, stressing that acceptance is driven by branding, promotion, and audience connection.

He explained that only listeners who naturally resonate with a particular sound will appreciate it, while others may not — a reality that has little to do with talent.

Meanwhile, 2Baba has also appealed to Nigerians to shift their attention away from his personal life and focus on more pressing national issues.

Speaking during a recent performance, the singer expressed concern that discussions surrounding his marriage to Edo State lawmaker Natasha Osawaru had lingered for too long.

He said Nigeria faces more serious challenges that deserve public attention, adding that excessive focus on celebrity gossip does little to move the country forward.

Reflecting on his long career, 2Baba noted that he has spent decades entertaining Nigerians and believes it is time for conversations to center on matters that truly impact society.
