“Benin Is Not a Jungle” — PDP Demands Justice Over Attack on Obaseki’s Relative

Tension has risen in Edo State following the reported assault of Dr. Pedro Obaseki, a relative of former governor Godwin Obaseki. The incident, which reportedly occurred in Benin City, has drawn strong condemnation from the Peoples Democratic Party, which described the act as a dangerous example of mob justice.

Dr. Pedro Obaseki, who previously served as Managing Director of DAAR Communications, was allegedly attacked while visiting a local sports facility to play football. Witness accounts indicate that the situation quickly escalated into violence when a group of armed individuals confronted him.

Reports suggest that the attackers not only assaulted him but also subjected him to humiliation. According to circulating accounts, he was stripped and treated in a degrading manner before being marched through public spaces.

The incident reportedly continued as the attackers escorted him toward the palace of Oba Ewuare II. A video shared widely online appeared to show the victim partially unclothed while being led by the group toward the palace premises.

Those involved in the act allegedly told palace guards that they had captured someone they described as an “enemy of the Oba,” using a local term interpreted as an adversary of the traditional institution.

However, palace officials reportedly informed the group that the monarch was not present at the time. According to explanations given in the Bini language, the Oba had travelled to the Holy Arousa Cathedral to attend a thanksgiving service marking the conclusion of the annual Igue Festival.

Despite resistance from those who brought the victim to the palace, chiefs reportedly intervened and escorted Dr. Pedro Obaseki inside the palace compound for safety.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, the PDP accused youths linked to the All Progressives Congress of being responsible for the attack and the humiliating treatment of the victim.

The party also raised questions about the handling of the situation by law enforcement authorities. It expressed concern over reports suggesting that while the victim was taken to a police station, individuals suspected of carrying out the assault were not immediately arrested.

In response to the incident, the PDP outlined several demands aimed at ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence in law enforcement. Among the actions the party called for were:

  • A thorough investigation to identify and prosecute every person involved in the attack.
  • Public clarification from traditional institutions distancing themselves from the incident.
  • An explanation from state authorities and the police regarding their handling of the situation.
  • Immediate measures to curb politically motivated violence and thuggery in Edo State.

The party also extended sympathy to Dr. Pedro Obaseki and his family, emphasizing that no citizen deserves such treatment regardless of political differences.

In a strongly worded remark, the PDP insisted that the situation must not be allowed to define the identity of Benin City. According to the party, the historic city should not be associated with lawlessness or mob violence.

Party officials further warned that the incident reflects a broader pattern of insecurity, claiming that intimidation, street attacks, and politically motivated violence appear to be increasing in parts of the state.

They also cautioned against attempts to justify violent behavior by invoking traditional authority. According to the PDP, no cultural institution sanctions acts such as torture, forced stripping, or public humiliation.

Another concern raised by the party involved what it described as a troubling reversal of justice. PDP representatives questioned why the victim reportedly faced questioning by police while those accused of the assault appeared to move freely.

The party concluded its statement by urging the Edo State Commissioner of Police to carry out investigations independently and uphold the rule of law. It stressed that any perception of selective justice or political interference could undermine public trust in security institutions.

Commentary and Analysis

The incident highlights growing concerns about mob justice and politically charged violence in parts of Nigeria. When citizens or political supporters take matters into their own hands, the line between political rivalry and criminal activity can quickly become blurred.

Benin City, historically known for its cultural heritage and strong traditional institutions, has rarely been associated with such dramatic public confrontations. For that reason, the case has sparked widespread debate about political conduct and respect for legal processes.

Another dimension of the controversy is the involvement of political accusations between rival parties. In Nigeria’s highly competitive political environment, incidents involving violence often trigger mutual blame among opposing camps.

Beyond the immediate political arguments, however, the central issue remains the protection of citizens’ rights and dignity. Regardless of political affiliation, public assault and humiliation violate both constitutional protections and societal values.

Ultimately, the response of law enforcement and the outcome of investigations will likely determine whether the incident becomes a turning point for stronger accountability or simply another unresolved controversy within Nigeria’s political landscape.
